He said the risk of having an erection is very low and is relatively low, but it’s worth noting that sildenafil is only used for treating erectile dysfunction and not for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
He said: “There’s no evidence that sildenafil can cause an erection in men.
“But it’s important to keep in mind that the side effects of sildenafil are relatively rare and are usually temporary.”
He said: “Erectile dysfunction is a very serious issue. It can be caused by a combination of things. The main reason for this is that the heart is already pumping blood to the penis.
“You can have an erection for months without it happening, and then you can’t have an erection for six months and then you have this erection again. It’s much more common in men who have hypertension, and even more common in men with diabetes, and it is associated with cardiovascular disease.”
Professor Andrew Fleming, a urological expert, added: “It’s very important for men with erectile dysfunction to get help when they first turn to taking drugs.
“They have to take a drug and then see how the drug works. You can’t just go to a pharmacy to buy some medicines.”
He said: “It’s very important to have a conversation with your GP to get the right advice about taking the right drugs. That’s a very important conversation.”
Professor Fleming said the only other option for men with erectile dysfunction was to get help from a professional and that was available only on prescription.
He added: “There is a lot of discussion around this. It’s very important that men get help when they first turn to taking drugs.”
